DIY Mini Chalkboard

This project had its birth in a Saturday trip to Hobby Lobby. I was standing in the wood isle, looking at all the beautiful signs–when I remembered the chalkboard spray paint I had at home. So I picked the cutest board (let me correct that: the cutest one under $10…) I could find and ran away before I was tempted to buy anything else. πŸ˜‰

Here’s how I made my own mini chalkboard sign–it’s very simple, fairly inexpensive, absolutely cute, and I’m sure you can do it too. πŸ™‚

Supplies:

  • Any kind of smooth, sanded board or sign
  • Chalkboard spray paint
  • Painters’ tape
  • Chalk

I started by taping off all the edges of my framed board with painters’ tape to keep the chalkboard paint off…

And then–well–spray painted it! This was my first time using spray paint, and unfortunately, it turned out to be a bit more difficult than I had imagined. 😦 It’s hard to put it down in an even layer, and you have to hold the can at an angle for the paint to come out properly. But, I got the job done, and if I can do it–you can too! πŸ˜€ Oh, and I almost forgot, you must let your dog smell it when you’re finished:

Shadow is very curious

And then I waited a very loooong time for the paint to fully dry.

Once my wait was over, I went ahead and ripped all the painters tape off. πŸ™‚

Then I primed my chalkboard by rubbing a piece of chalk all over it. As to why, I unfortunately can’t tell you. I just saw another crafter do this when creating a chalk board out of a white board, so I figured it must be a necessary step for some reason. πŸ˜‰

Don’t do this

Anyhow, I then proceeded to make a terrible mistake by trying to wipe the chalk off with damp and then dry paper towels. It worked horribly, and left little pieces of lint all over my once perfectly black and beautiful board. 😦

Do this

So I switched to using a rag instead, and was very pleased with the results.

When I finished, I thought it looked a bit bland, so I glued on a faux flower, added some glitter glue swirls…stepped back and smiled. ❀

Hope you all have as much fun with this as I did!

Happy DIYing! πŸ˜‰
